Engagement on disruptive technologies at the 2026 WCO Technology Conference & Exhibition
From 28 to 30 January 2026, the WCO Smart Customs Project (SCP), funded by China Customs, exhibited at the WCO Technology Conference & Exhibition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Held under the theme “Customs Agility in a Complex World: Securing and Facilitating Trade through Innovation”, the WCO’s flagship annual event attracted over 1,500 participants from more than 100 countries.
In addition to presenting its initiatives and connecting with delegates at its booth, the SCP engaged in active discussions on the roll-out of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and the Internet of Things in Customs operations.
The SCP’s exchanges with representatives of Member Customs administrations were characterized by strong interest in practical information and in guidance on disruptive and emerging technologies. This interest was driven by the challenges arising from an increasingly complex operating environment for Customs, including the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce and the speed with which illicit trade is adapting to innovations in legitimate trade.
